Flint water crisis likely the cause of deadly Legionnaires outbreak

Flint water crisis likely the cause of deadly Legionnaires outbreakā€

It may be a tall order, but if everything goes the way lawmakers promises, Flint residents will have new, lead-free water pipes by 2020.

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that the state of MI has agreed to shell out an estimated $87 million to replace at least 18,000 lead pipes through 2020 in an effort to finally deliver clean tap water for taxpayers.

The settlement also will require a schedule for water line replacements to be issued while the state gets a schedule for weaning Flint off the community resource stations where water filters, bottled water and filter replacement cartridges are now being distributed for free. The state must also hold an extra $10 million in reserve, in case the repairs end up being more expensive than anticipated.

The city is under pressure to get more water customers to pay up now that state subsidies have ended and the city faces mounting costs.

They spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the internal matter. It is unclear if they are the same as those viewed by Nunes.

Dimple Chaudhary, a senior attorney with NRDC, said the settlement is a major step forward for residents, after almost two years of legal effort to get the city to resolve its water crisis.

"In my view the settlement agreement is fair, adequate, reasonable and consistent with the public interest and it furthers the objectives of the safe water drinking act", U.S. District Judge David Lawson said from the bench.

Marc Edwards, an expert at Virginia Tech who in 2015 warned about risky lead levels after Gov. Rick Snyder's administration repeatedly dismissed the concerns, said the agreement is a good deal for residents.

Yeah, remember that time Flint's water was completely undrinkable and the governor, who messed everything up, refused to help the majority Black city after his negligence surfaced? Overton added, "Does this agreement leave the community better off than it was before?"

GOP Eyes Tax Overhaul -- And Lessons From Health-Care Failure
Trump threw his weight behind the Republicans' replacement bill, cajoling and strong-arming House members to vote for the bill. The bill, backed by Trump, has proved a tough sell to both conservative and moderate factions in his own Republican party.

The City of Flint found itself in the midst of a water contamination crisis after local officials switched the city's water supply to the highly polluted Flint River in April 2014, causing toxic lead to leach into the water supply. Three years later, government officials are just now starting the process for a new water line. They also will not receive door-to-door bottled water delivery to the extent they requested. The nonprofit, which aims to protect public health and the environment, has worked with the ACLU of MI to represent Flint residents in the lawsuit.

Jones also reportedly said there are "considerable questions around the ... water at the tap" in a meeting of the Flint Water Interagency Coordinating Committee last month. "The people of Flint are owed at least this much".

"This hard-fought victory means safer water for Flint". Former President Barack Obama signed off on the bipartisan funding bill shortly before leaving office a year ago. Until that happens, the city will continue to provide access to drinking water for homeowners (though, according to ABC News, some free bottled water centers may begin to close depending on demand).

Coaches: North Carolina Final Four advantage to fade after tipoff
The tournament - to date - we're up 10 percent this year over last year, averaging 9.8 million viewers, which is just spectacular. The Zags were expected to reach the national semifinals as a No. 1 seed, but the seventh-seeded Gamecocks are a huge surprise.
