British PM May fires starting gun on Brexit

British Prime Minister Theresa May signs the official letter invoking Article 50.

Speaking hours after the trigger Merkel said Germany would work hard to ensure as little disruption as possible for people who have grown used to living, working and travelling seamlessly between the European Union and Britain. Talking to the House of Commons after Article 50 was invoked, the prime minister reiterated that leaving the European Union presents a "unique opportunity" to "build a stronger, fairer, better Britain - a Britain our children and grandchildren are proud to call home".

ADS Chief Executive Paul Everitt (above) said: "The UK's high value aerospace, defence, space & security industries need the Government and its European Union partners to agree an ambitious and comprehensive trading relationship".

Britons voted by 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the EU in a referendum back in June 2016, but the United Kingdom government couldn't cut the cord from the 28-member European bloc until it had the approval of its parliament.

The parliament resolution also says the United Kingdom can't negotiate trade agreements with third countries while it remains an European Union member, and "warns" that any bilateral arrangement between Britain and one or more of the remaining member states would violate the bloc's laws. "We are going to make our own decisions and our own laws", she said. "Thank you and goodbye".

He added: "We will preserve the unity of the 27 state members as we move forward with European integration".

"I made a promise to hold a referendum, I think it was the right thing to do", said the Conservative ex-premier, who called the referendum.

The European Council chief warned that no one would emerge as a victor during the divorce process, which will essentially be about "damage control".

Terming the issue as a very important one, the bench had asked both governments should sit together and take a stand on it. The apex court also asked Union of India to file a reply in this regard within April 10.

"The Prime Minister is twisting the will of the people, leaping into the abyss without any idea of where our country will end up", said the Liberal Democrat leader. "The people can have their say over what comes next".

The Scottish National Party accused Mrs May of breaking a promise to forge a "UK-wide approach" to Brexit before triggering Article 50.

Newspapers in London displayed a mix of emotions Wednesday after Prime Minister Theresa May signed a letter that formally kicked off Britain's departure from the European Union. "Why has she broken her word and her commitment?"
