Bright lava lights up Sicilian sky as Mount Etna erupts

Bright lava lights up Sicilian sky as Mount Etna erupts”

Italy's Mount Etna volcano has had its second eruption this year, with bright lava pouring down the side of the crater, contrasting with the snow-capped peaks of the Sicilian island.

Etna, at 3,330 meters (10,926 feet), is the highest volcano in mainland Europe and can burst into action several times a year.

Mount Etna began spewing smoke and hot lava on Monday. The volcano's last major eruption was in 1992 and threatened the town of Zafferana, but ultimately led to successful lava diversion efforts. Some even hike in order to get closer to the volcano's mouth, while some are lucky enough to see a volcanic eruption.

During that eruption, as lava threatened to overtake a Sicilian village, USA marines lent a hand during the aptly named Operation Volcano Buster.

The giant orange fountains of lava, spewing towards the sky, could be seen in the city of Catania and the resort town of Taormina.
