Brexit timeline: What happens next once Article 50 is triggered?

It comes as Mrs May told ministers her letter giving notice of Brexit will "set the tone for our new relationship with Europe and the world", in a signal that it could be a substantial statement of the UK's intentions rather than a simple message informing the European Union that she is triggering Article 50.

Mrs May is expected to make a statement to the House of Commons shortly after invoking Article 50.

"The quicker we agree on the principles. the sooner we can prepare these future relations", he said.

In declaring that its chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, will not have a mandate to negotiate a trade deal or other future agreement, Brussels is clearly seeking some tactical advantage, trying to force resolution of divorce issues like the U.K.'s post-Brexit financial obligations and the rights of citizens.

European Union leaders will hold a special summit on 29 April to adopt Brexit guidelines aimed at making the split the "least painful" for the bloc, Council President Donald Tusk said on Tuesday (21 March).

Goldman Sachs strategist: Yes, Marine Le Pen can win in France
If Macron gets only 75 percent of his voters to cast their ballots, Le Pen could be the next president of France. She said that she had her "own viewpoint on Ukraine, [which is] identical to Russia's".

Negotiations are expected to begin with "talks about talks", with arguments over whether divorce and trade discussions should take place simultaneously, as the United Kingdom wishes, or whether consideration of future trade relations should be put off until after arrangements for withdrawal are agreed, as the Commission wants.

"Our main priority for the negotiations must be to create as much certainty and clarity as possible for all citizens, companies and member states that will be negatively affected by Brexit, as well as our important partners and friends around the world, like Japan".

Mr Tusk said his priority was making sure the "divorce" was the "least painful" for the EU.

The guidelines that the EU leaders will adopt will govern how Mr. Barnier approaches Brexit negotiations, along with a more detailed set of rules from the European Commission.

Despite ministers warning that no deal is better than a bad deal, the Lords EU Internal Market Committee has warned of the risk of "serious harm" to Britain's non-financial service sector if the United Kingdom fails to hammer out a trade agreement with Brussels.

"Providing for a transition period will be important for all relevant parties", Abe said.

At a press conference in Brussels, he said: "In view of what was announced in London yesterday, I would like to inform you that I will call a European Council on Saturday April 29 to adopt the guidelines for the Brexit talks".

The UK Government should be prepared to accept the continued jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice in some areas after the UK has left the EU, a cross-party group of MPs has said.

He repeated the European Union mantra that a trade deal with Britain could not mean a menu choice of Britain's current privileges and obligations and that such a deal could only come after an agreement on the terms of the divorce.
