New York, Boston Braced for Foot of Snow: Schools Closed, Flights Canceled

The forecast for the winter storm expected to hit Long Island on Thursday has worsened again, with more than a foot of snow now expected in some areas bracing for blizzard conditions. In all it looks like most of the area sees at least a foot of snow - with a range of 10-16 inches across SNE.

Nationwide, about 3,600 flights were canceled, according to Flightaware.com.

Risky travel conditions are forecast for I-95 cities from Philadelphia to New York City and Boston, the National Weather Service said.

Sam Lopresti, of Jersey City, New Jersey, warm and dry in his workplace, said he'd been pleasantly surprised that his early-morning train trip to Manhattan had gone smoothly. According to the agency, the snow is expected to fall heavily through the afternoon before tapering off to snow showers in the evening.

February 8, 3:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Suffolk County for the winter storm heading our way late Wednesday into Thursday.

White: The city has been covered in a blanket of snow. Subway service in NY is still as functional as it ever is, though the Long Island and Metro-North Railroads experiencing delays.

NWS warns that heavy snow can make travel unsafe, and advises that if you must travel, you should keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The storm blasting the Northeast with snow and blustery winds is wreaking havoc on air travel, canceling thousands of flights Thursday.

Authorities are pleading with people to stay off the roads and warned of worsening conditions.

Scores of school districts, including Boston and New York City, had announced on Wednesday that schools would be closed. The city public works department said it was ready.
