Fallen Battalion Chief Michael Fahy mourned

The last FDNY official to die in the line of duty was more than two years ago, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association website, when Lt. Gordon Ambelas was killed in a Brooklyn blaze in July 2014.

Jake Lemonda, president of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, gives a statement about Michael Fahy, an FDNY battalion chief from Yonkers, that was killed in a Bronx explosion, September 27, 2016 outside the 19th battalion firehouse in the Bronx.

Update, 4:30 p.m.: Julio Salcedo, the man residing in the house where the explosion occurred in the Bronx, was arrested in Cliffside Park, New Jersey by the Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Post reports.

He is being held at the Cliffside Park police station pending extradition to NY.

"We lost a hero today and our members are all saddened", Nigro said of the "rising star".

Fahy, assigned to the 19th battalion, leaves behind a wife and three children, ages 6, 8 and 11. Officials say it is unclear whether the marijuana grow operation played a direct role in the explosion of the home but they are not ruling it out.

Nigro said firefighters, police, civilians, and workers from the Con Edison utility company were also hurt but those injuries were not life-threatening.

The explosion Tuesday morning killed Michael Fahy, a 17-year veteran and the son of a fire chief.

Mr. Fahy was standing in the street when he was struck by a piece of the roof, Mr. Nigro said. The NYPD had preliminary information the home was a suspected lab for weeks, though it had been in the middle of investigating it, according to NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill.

"I was up this morning getting my daughter ready for school, and I heard a loud [sound] like an explosion", Murphy said.

"Obviously the loss is tremendous for us, and I know everybody here feels awful that his three children were left to grow up without him", Chief Mike Woods said.

Later Tuesday, investigators said they were questioning a person of interest but provided no details.

They determined it was likely a hydroponic marijuana growing lab with propane tanks, sources said. Mayor Bill de Blasio said that it was a reminder of the daily risks the firefighters face.

The explosion rocked the neighborhood, and the entire second floor of the house was destroyed.

Arrangements for Chief Fahy's funeral are still being made.
